Five-time Olympic gold medaillist Ian Thorpe retires. At the age of 24! Thorpe was a great swimmer, but he wasn’t motivated anymore. He wants to start a new chapter.

“It’s like swimming lap after lap staring at a black line – then all of a sudden you look up” at the world around you, he has said, writes News.

The carreer of Thorpe is impressing: five Olympic gold medals, eleven world titels and thirteen world records. He was/is a superstar and was succesful in attracting sponsors. He said he doesn’t know yet what he will do, but he whatever it is, it will be good.

The specialities of Thorpe were the 200 meter and 400 meter freestyle.

Melbourne Cup

Tomorrow, 7th November, the Melbourne Cup is run. The race on Flemington Racecourse is Australia’s major horserace. It’s a three day event and it attracts a lot of people. A crowd of 128.000 was present on Derby Day, past Saturday. A record. The Victoria Racing Club expects a 100.000+ attendance for Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup and Thursday’s Oaks Day.

Melbourne Cup

The Melbourne Cup is more than racing alone. It’s a carnival. There’s ‘Fashion on the Fields’. The most elegant male and female racegoers are awarded a prize. Melbourne Cup is a public holiday in the Melbourne area.

This year Tawqeet could win the race. If it does, it will create history for his trainer, David Hayes. No trainer has ever won the ‘big four’ :the Golden Slipper, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.

Russian tennisstar Maria Sharapova has a top ten cities where she likes to stay. Melbourne is on six. Why? “I have only been there during the summer when the people wear really cute sarongs. And everybody is super friendly… a HUGE plus.” Her three most favourite cities are Rome, London and of course New York.
